Can you teach me how to draw closer to God?

My name is Kimmy and I have been following Jesus for eight years now. Everyone makes mistakes, and I am no exception. During these eight years, I became very far away from God for a good five years because of my bad habits. Looking back now, I lived in a muddle during those five years and was even ashamed to pray to God.

I made a big mistake in 2020. Because of the pressures of family and work, I became depressed and did not talk about it to anyone nor did I pray to God about it. The constant sadness, disappointment, and tears were an infinite cycle. I would get angry and frustrated over the little things, and because of my emotions, the overall atmosphere of my home was very depressive. This continued until 2021, when my sister, who I was out of touch with for four years, suddenly contacted me again.

My sister was not a Christian in the past, but now that she had believed in Jesus, she had completely turned over a new leaf. She was a single mother and lived a difficult life. Many trivial matters and emotional depression caused her to be extremely irritable, even to the point where she would hit and scold her children. However, after she believed in Jesus, she no longer had a bad temper and was filled with joy every day. Her three children also prayed and worshiped God with her daily. When I witnessed such a big change in my own sister, I knew that only the love and power of Jesus could cause such a transformation. So, I asked her, “Can you teach me how to draw closer to God?”

Since then, I would give my sister a call every night and we would worship God together over the phone. I also learned to pray and sought the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Bible, Jesus teaches us how to pray to the Father. This prayer is called the Lord’s Prayer:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” (NIV Matthew 6:9-13)

It’s amazing what God’s will can be! I found that my bad emotions had gradually improved and were much easier to control. I also remember praying to God, asking to work with Christians, and He answer my prayer. The boss at my new workplace is a Christian, and thus I benefited a lot from this job. When I focus on God, I feel comfort and peace in my heart. God also gave me wisdom and confidence and guided me to overcome my difficulties with work and personal matters, one after the other. This reminds me that God’s sovereignty is above all else. I believe with all my heart that what I have gone through has happened according to God’s timing. God has already prepared His salvation for each of us. There is no one too good to have Jesus in their life, and no one so bad whom Jesus cannot save. Therefore, while you have this opportunity, come to Jesus and let Him change your life so that it will never be the same again.
